Codes

The BCI is responsible for the implementation and development of codes and rules covering standards in broadcasting. These come from both the Broadcasting Act, 1990 and the Broadcasting Act, 2001.

Below are the various existing and future codes and rules which will govern broadcasters in Ireland. Please click on each link for further details on each code:

Further to Section 19 of the Broadcasting Act 2001, the Commission has been directed to develop additional codes and rules to replace the 1995 Ministerial Codes and their amendments.

The Children's Advertising Code became fully operational on 1st January 2005 and the Access Rules were launched on 1st March 2005.

The General Advertising Code and the Code of Programme Standards became fully operational on April 10th, 2007.


All codes will apply to all broadcasters - public service, commercial and community radio and television.
