FAQs

How do I complain about something I heard on the radio or saw on TV?

The Broadcasting Complaints Commission has the responsibility to deal with all broadcasting complaints concerning radio and television broadcasters licensed within the Republic of Ireland, which means the Commission looks at, considers and decides upon the nature of these complaints. The BCC is a complaint-driven organisation.

Any viewer or listener who is not happy about broadcasting content on an Irish licensed broadcasting service, whether in programme or advertisement form, has a right to complain about it and have their complaint handled by the Broadcasting Complaints Commission.

Its task is to consider and adjudicate upon complaints about material broadcast, both programmes & advertisements, in relation to: -

  • impartiality in news & current affairs
  • taste & decency,
  • law & order,
  • privacy of an individual,
  • slander,
  • published matter in relation to RTÉ and Ministerial prohibitions,
  • codes of standards, practice and prohibition in advertising, sponsorship and other forms of commercial promotion in broadcasting services
  • children's advertising code.
The Commissions remit is derived from various legislative acts, the most recent of which is the Broadcasting Act, 2001.

The Commission Members are nominated by Government and hold office for a period of five-years.
