Section 8 (1) of the Radio and Television Act, 1988 and amended by Section 61 of the Broadcasting Act, 2001 enables the Commission to enter into sound broadcasting contracts with applicants for a period of 30 days in a 12 month period. Groups interested in establishing community services would often initially avail of temporary sound broadcasting contracts. In the past, these services have also been used for college rag weeks, town festivals, music festivals and sports events.
