BCI SIGNS QUASI - NATIONAL CONTRACT WITH NEWSTALK 106-108
The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland has today (7th September) welcomed the publication of the General Scheme for the Broadcasting Bill, 2006. The General Scheme, which contains proposals in the form of the draft Heads of a proposed Broadcasting Bill, has been received by the Joint Oireachtas Committee from the Department of Communications and a public consultation process will now take place.
Commenting on the development, Chairperson of the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland Conor Maguire said, “the Commission welcomes the publication of this document and we look forward to engaging in the consultation process. The BCI has previously made submissions, through the Forum on Broadcasting and subsequent presentations to the Joint Oireachtas Committee supporting the establishment of a single content regulator. We are pleased that the concept of single content regulation has been endorsed by the government as set out in the General Scheme document”.
The Commission will consider the proposals outlined in the document at a special meeting of the Board on September 28th next and will make a detailed response to the Joint Oireachtas Committee as part of their consultation process
