FOR RELEASE: 5th JANUARY 2007
136 APPLICATIONS RECEIVED FOR THIRD RADIO ROUND OF
SOUND & VISION SCHEME
The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland has today (Friday 5th January) announced the receipt of a total of 136 applications for radio funding in the third round of Sound & Vision, the Broadcasting Funding Scheme. The Scheme offers grants for new radio programmes on themes of Irish culture, heritage and experience and is funded by 5% of the television licence fee.
In this third round of the scheme, 136 applications were received from the sector; with a total allocation of €3.2m requested. The majority of applications were received from the commercial (62) and community (60) sectors with both special interest (8) and public service (6) broadcasters making up the balance.
Once again documentary was the main genre, but a significant number of proposals were received for drama projects. Applications were also received for children’s, entertainment and factual programmes.
A total of 11 assessment panels have now been established involving subject experts in the relevant areas and BCI staff. The assessment panels will compile a package of recommendations for submission and approval by the Board of the BCI. It is anticipated that the assessment and decision–making process will be completed by mid February.
The closing date for round 3 television applications is 12 noon on Friday 12th January.
