BCI AWARDS FUNDING OF €1.1M IN THIRD RADIO ROUND OF SOUND & VISION
The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) has today announced the funding of over €1.1m for radio programming in the third round of Sound & Vision, the Broadcasting Funding Scheme. This figure represents a two-fold increase in the allocation of funding to radio projects in each of the previous rounds.
137 radio applications were received from the sector in this third round of the Scheme. 75 of these were awarded funding. Of this total, 56 projects or 65% of the total amount awarded were documentaries. Remaining funding went to a variety of other genres including childrens’, entertainment and drama. Irish language and bi-lingual programmes accounted for 15 projects representing 27% of the total financial allocation.
Commenting on the announcement, Chief Executive of the BCI, Michael O’Keeffe said: “We are delighted to offer funding of €1.1m in this radio round of Sound & Vision. I am confident that this will add to the diversity of programmes available to Irish radio listeners. The increase in funding reflects the very high standard of applications received in terms of development, research, originality and relevance to the Scheme.”
The funding awards were approved at a meeting of the Commission on February 19th last, following consideration of the recommendations made by eleven assessment panels. The assessment panels comprise staff members of the Broadcasting Funding Division, experts in the radio sector and subject experts from the relevant thematic areas.
The BCI will now begin the process of contract negotiations with all successful applicants.
An appendix to this press release details all the radio programmes that have been recommended for funding.
