BCI ISSUES GENERAL ELECTION GUIDELINES

The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) has issued guidelines to all commercial and community broadcasters regarding coverage of the General Election 2007, which will take place on Thursday May 24th next.

The Guidelines outline the approach that should be adopted by broadcasters in their coverage of the 2007 General Election.  The importance of impartial and independent coverage of the election is emphasised in the Guidelines and stations are encouraged to develop mechanisms for providing coverage of the election which are open, transparent and fair to all interested parties.  The Guidelines extend to news coverage, current affairs programmes, advertising and election broadcasts.

The General Election Guidelines also detail coverage restrictions which will apply in the final 24 hours before polling commences and while polling is underway.  This moratorium extends to coverage of election candidates, their activities/policies, or any material which relates to the activities/policies of any political party.

A copy of the General Election Guidelines, 2007 is available on the Commission’s web-site, www.bci.ie or on request from the Commission’s offices at 01-6441200.
