BCI ANNOUNCES EXTENSION OF ACCESS RULES

The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland has today (July 5th) announced the extension of the Access Rules to three new television services-

  • Channel 6
  • City Channel South East and Waterford
  • City Channel Galway

This brings to 10 the number of services required to provide access services to improve the enjoyment of television programming by people who are deaf or hard of hearing and people who are blind or partially sighted.

The Commission has updated and published the Access Rules to reflect this decision. A copy of the Access Rules and the Statement of Outcomes outlining the Commission’s rationale is available from the Commission’s offices and can be viewed on the Commission’s website www.bci.ie

The Access Rules have been in effect since 2005 and have been developed further to Section 19(11) of the Broadcasting Act, 2001 and will be reviewed in 2008 and 2010.

Speaking about the extension of the rules, Michael O’Keeffe, BCI Chief Executive said: “the provision of access by broadcasters remains a key requirement of the Commission in respect of licensed television services. The Commission believes that the extension of rules to these three new services is an important step forward in the promotion of the understanding and enjoyment of services by the relevant groups”.

The document is also available in hardcopy format, Braille, signed video and audio cassette, on request from the offices of the BCI.
