RÉALT DJ 2007/2008 LAUNCHED

The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) has today (October 25th) announced the launch of the Réalt DJ competition for 2007/2008.   The competition, which is in its fourth year, provides a chance for a third level student to win a top prize of thirteen weeks work experience with a radio station.  Eight radio stations, broadcasting nationally, regionally and locally are participating in this year’s competition which involves the compilation by students of a twenty minute radio programme in Irish.  Entrants must decide on the content and format for the show and submit their CD to one of the participating stations.  The eight stations taking part in this year’s competition are Beat 102-103 FM, Midlands 103FM, Mid-West Radio, Spin South West, Spin 1038, Tipp FM, Today FM and WLR FM.

The Réalt DJ competition is an initiative of the Irish Language Development Committee. The Committee is made up of representatives of the commercial and community radio sectors, the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland and Foras na Gaeilge.  The Committee’s goals include increasing the level and consistency of Irish language broadcasting across all independent radio stations; devising and mainstreaming successful radio programming initiatives and; increasing the capacity of independent radio to produce Irish language programmes.

The closing date for entry into this year’s competition is December 1st 2007.  Each of the eight stations involved in Réalt DJ will chose their successful finalist, who will win and ipod nano, and will then be entered into the final phase of competition to choose the overall winner.

Further details about the competition can be obtained through the individual stations taking part in Réalt DJ 2007/2008.  It is anticipated that the overall winner will be announced in the first quarter of 2008.
