BCI AWARDS OVER €700k TO RADIO THROUGH
SOUND & VISION SCHEME
The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) has today announced the award of €706,780 for radio programming in the fifth round of Sound & Vision, the Broadcasting Funding Scheme. Overall €3.7m has been invested in radio projects since the scheme’s inception.
117 radio applications were received in the fifth round and 60 of these were awarded funding. Documentaries accounted for 71% of proposals funded and this reflects the number of applications received in this area. Other genres to receive funding included factual, entertainment, children’s programming, drama and sport. The majority of programmes funded will be broadcast on commercial and community stations while public service and special interest stations also received some support.
Commenting on the announcement, Chief Executive of the BCI, Michael O’Keeffe said: “This investment of over €700k in radio programming emphasises the positive impact the Sound & Vision Scheme is having on the production of high quality radio programmes for Irish audiences. The quality of the submissions received continues to increase from round to round and the emerging programmes bring great additionality to the schedules of the participating stations.”
The funding awards were approved at the November meeting of BCI Board, following consideration of the recommendations made by assessment panels. These panels comprised experts in the radio sector, subject experts from the relevant thematic areas and BCI staff members. Contract negotiations with successful applicants are now underway and an appendix to this press release details all the radio programmes that have been awarded funding.
