REALT DJ 2007 WINNER ANNOUNCED
The winner of the Réalt DJ 2007 competition, an Irish Language Development Committee initiative, was announced today (Wednesday February 27th). Meadhbh Ní Eadhra, representing Today FM, was this year’s competition winner. The top prize for the 2007 competition offers Meadhbh the opportunity to gain thirteen weeks work experience with the national broadcaster.
Meadhbh’s competition entry was praised in the adjudication process for the standard of Irish which was considered of broadcast quality, together with an understanding of radio programming, which was reflected in the structure of the programme.
This is the fourth year of the Réalt DJ competition and to date the competition has attracted close to 120 competitors. The scheme provides entrants with the opportunity to compile a twenty-minute broadcast and to act as DJ, all through the medium of Irish. In contrast to previous years, the 2007 competition targeted third level students and included local, regional and national broadcasters. A total of eight radio stations participated in the 2007 competition; Beat 102 – 103 FM, Midlands 103, Mid West Radio, Spin 1038, Spin South West, Tipp FM, Today FM and WLRFM. All of the regional winners, selected by the stations, won an iPod shuffle.
The Réalt DJ competition is an initiative of the Irish Language Development Committee. The Committee is made up of representatives of the commercial and community radio sectors, the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland and Foras na Gaeilge.
Commenting on the announcement Michael O’Keeffe, Chief Executive of the BCI said, “I would like to congratulate the overall winner, Meadhbh Ní Eadhra on her achievement, particularly in putting together a competition entry which was of such high quality. I would also like to congratulate all the regional finalists for their effort and enthusiasm and the stations themselves, who have committed themselves to this important Irish language initiative. The Commission is proud to be associated with Réalt DJ, and will continue, as a member of the Irish Language Development Committee, to explore and promote the use of Irish in the broadcasting sector. ”
