BCI OPENS 2008 ROUND OF MEDIA RESEARCH FUNDING SCHEME

The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland has today announced details of two project grants available under its Media Research Funding Scheme.  The Scheme, which was launched in 2007, has funded three research projects to date to a value of €48,000; two addressing the issue of Ireland’s changing demographics, with the remaining research project exploring media literacy among 25-34 year olds.

It is the BCI’s intention that a total of two projects will receive funding in 2008, to a value of €16,000 per project, per annum and applications are being sought under any one of three categories; short, medium or long-term research projects.  The Commission has also outlined its areas of interest with regard to research, in keeping with the organisation’s own research agenda and in anticipation of developments in the broadcasting sector.  These areas of interest include such topics as implementing the EU Audiovisual Media Services Directive; Irish language and Irish music on mainstream radio; political advertising; media concentration and Digital Audio Broadcasting in Ireland.

Speaking about today’s announcement, the BCI Chief Executive, Michael O’Keeffe said: “The BCI is committed through its policies and practices to evidence-based decision making, and the media research funding scheme provides a mechanism which enables us to give practical effect to this approach.  The areas of interest identified by the Commission are particularly pertinent in helping us to respond to future developments across a range of issues, in an informed manner.  We look forward to the receipt of high-quality applications as part of the current round of the media research funding scheme”.

Interested parties have until Thursday July 10th to submit their applications and individual applicants may apply under only one category in any given year.  Further information on the Media Research Funding Scheme is available on request from the Commission at 01-6441200 or by e-mail to straynor@bci.ie
