BCI LAUNCHES CONSULTATION PROCESS ON ARCHIVING SCHEME

The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) has today commenced a consultation process on a grant-aid scheme for the archiving of programme material. The development of such a scheme is provided for under the Broadcasting (Funding) Act, 2003 and the Commission is now seeking views from interested parties on the structure and content of the scheme.  The consultation process has been underpinned by research to determine the levels and types of archiving engaged in by broadcasters in Ireland and internationally.

Speaking about the consultation process, Michael O’Keeffe, Chief Executive of the BCI said, “Currently Ireland exhibits significant levels of archiving practice among broadcasters, however this experience is uneven.  The current consultation process is taking place within the context of the Broadcasting (Funding) Act, but also in light of the Broadcasting Bill 2008, sections of which focus specifically on encouraging and facilitating the development of archiving.  The desired outcome from the current consultation process is the development of a grant-aid scheme for the archiving of programme material, which will promote good practice and facilitate a change in archiving practice, where required.”

The BCI is seeking views on a number of key aspects of the grant-aid scheme including objectives, the structure of the scheme; funding; and the role of the BCI.  Submissions received will be considered and will contribute to the development of a draft grant-aid scheme which will be submitted to the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources for approval.

Interested parties can dowload a copy of the consultation document from the BCI's website www.bci.ie/broadcast_funding_scheme/broadcast_archiving.html

Submissions can be emailed to lmcloughlin@bci.ie or posted to the Commission's offices, 2-5 Warrington Place, Dublin 2. The Closing date for receipt of sumissions is 12 noon, Tuesday 8th July, 2008
