BCI SEEKS EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FOR COMMUNITY AND COMMUNITY OF INTEREST SERVICES

The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) has today (16th September) placed an advertisement in the national press seeking expressions of interest from parties interested in securing a community or community of interest sound broadcasting contract.  The call for expressions of interest marks a new phase in the further development of community radio broadcasting in Ireland.

Commenting on the announcement, Michael O’Keeffe, Chief Executive of the BCI said “Since the Commission last sought expressions of interest in 2005, there has been a significant increase in the number of groups who have chosen to avail of temporary licences in order to pilot community services.  We feel that it is appropriate therefore to seek expressions of interest on a national basis in order to inform discussions on a new community radio licensing plan.”

In order to assist the Commission with the assessment process, interested parties are asked to provide more detailed information in line with the Commission’s Guidelines for the Submission of Expressions of Interest, September 2008.The document is available on the Commission’s web-site www.bci.ie or on request from the Commission’s offices, 01 6441200/ info@bci.ie

The closing date for receipt of expressions of interest is 5p.m., Thursday October 23rd.  All expressions of interest received will be made publicly available, following their consideration by the Commission.
