Winner of Réalt DJ competition announced

4th May 05

The winner of the Réalt DJ competition, in association with the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland and Foras na Gaeilge was announced at a ceremony in the Temple Bar Music Centre studio recently. Scott de Bultéar, representing Spin 1038, was this year´s competition winner. Scott´s prize included an opportunity to broadcast on air on Spin 1038, a chance to appear on Pop 4, TG4´s pop music chart show and he will also feature weekly on "Top 40 Oifigiúil na hÉireann".

This is the second year of the competition and it attracted close to 100 competitors. The scheme gives aspiring DJ´s an opportunity to broadcast through Irish on their local stations. Each of the six participating radio stations selected a short list of competitors, who attended a training event hosted by Lisa Ní Choisdealbha of the BCI and Ray Foley of Today FM in January of this year. Arising from this, one person from each station was selected to go forward to the final.

The five finalists in the competition were Scott de Butléar (Spin FM), Seoirse Ní Mhaoinigh (Midlands 103), Áine Tunney (Highland Radio), Clare-Leanne Gannon (Clare FM) and Nicola O Callaghan (Red FM).

Commenting on the announcement Michael O´Keeffe, Chief Executive of the BCI said, "I would like to congratulate Scott de Butléar and all the other finalists in this years´ Réalt DJ competition. The quality of entries received this year reflects the development of the competition and we would like to thank all participating stations in promoting this innovative and vibrant Irish radio competition. Both Foras na Gaeilge and ourselves look forward to the continued development of this scheme in the years to come."

The judges for the final were Rosemary Day (Mary Immaculate College), Ray Foley (Today FM) and Peadar Mac Gaoithín (Anner Media).

The BCI and Foras na Gaeilge, through the BCI´s Irish language co-ordinator Lisa Ní Coisdealbha, actively support and promote the use of the Irish language on radio. The Réalt DJ competition is one of a series of events used to achieve this aim.
