BCI seeks expressions of interest in new commercial sound broadcasting services
8th April 05
The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) has today (Friday April 8th) placed advertisements in the national press inviting expressions of interest for new commercial sound broadcasting services. The Commission is open to suggestions regarding both the types of services to be provided and the areas to be served. The expressions of interest received will assist the BCI in drawing up a three-to-five year licensing plan which will provide for additional commercial radio services across the country.
This expressions of interest phase will be somewhat different from those previously held by the Commission. More detailed information will be required from interested parties regarding the quality, range and type of services to be provided, but specifically the extent to which any new service will add to diversity. Issues such as viability and efficient use of spectrum will also need to be considered.
In order to aid potential applicants, the Commission has produced a document to assist the process. In addition the BCI will host a half-day briefing session in Dublin on April 20th where members of the BCI Executive will give a short presentation dealing with the format for submissions, new/alternative models for franchise areas and technical issues.
Michael O´Keeffe, Chief Executive of BCI, said: "This expression of interest phase follows on from the Commission´s policy meeting in February where it was decided that further licensing opportunities across the country should be pursued. This is a very exciting time for the BCI as we enter a new phase of licensing and we are confident that the expressions of interest received will play a key part in shaping the future of commercial broadcasting in Ireland in the years to come".
The closing date for receipt of expressions of interest is 5 p.m. on Wednesday, 25th May 2005. All expressions of interest will be made available publicly following consideration by the Commission.
