BCI receives twenty-nine submissions to news and current affairs consultation

6th July

The Broadcasting Commission Ireland (BCI) has today (Wednesday July 6th) announced the receipt of twenty-nine submissions in response to its recent consultation on the current policy on the statutory news and current affairs requirements for independent radio stations. The BCI is required by law to ensure that stations broadcast a minimum level of news and current affairs programming across the broadcast day.

The submissions received were from a broad range of licensed radio services, interest groups, representative bodies and individuals.

Commenting on the consultation process Chief Executive of the BCI, Michael O´Keeffe said, "The Commission is pleased with the level of response received to this consultation process. The Executive has been reviewing the submissions received over the last number of days and will prepare a detailed report for the consideration of the Board at their meeting on July 25th next. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who contributed to this consultation process."

It is anticipated that any decisions in respect of the news and current affairs policy will be implemented in advance of the commencement of any further licensing processes of the Commission.
