BCI SIGNS CONTRACT WITH DUBLIN COMMUNITY TELEVISION

The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) has today (Thursday May 4th) announced the recent signing of a ten year broadcasting contract with Dublin Community Television Society Ltd. (DCTV) for the provision of a community content television service, under section 38 of the Broadcasting Act, 2001. It is anticipated that the service will commence broadcasting on a pilot basis early in 2007 with a full service being place by the middle of next year.
DCTV will offer a range of means by which the community can learn about, manage and participate in television. Participation in the station and programming output will be guided by the founding objectives of DCTV; empowerment, participation and diversity.
DCTV will be broadcast on the ntl digital platform in Dublin City and County for two hours daily in early 2007, building up to a twelve hour daily schedule during the course of the year.
Commenting on the signing, Conor J. Maguire, Chairperson of the BCI said: “We are delighted to sign this contract with DCTV as it marks the first community content contract signed under the 2001 Act. The contract signing also marks the culmination of significant work undertaken by the BCI, in conjunction with community groups, in developing a community television policy. I wish DCTV every success in the coming years and am confident that they will ensure a participative, developmental approach to community broadcasting”.
DCTV was represented at the signings by Seán Ó Siochrú, Chairperson and Margaret Gillen, Secretary. Conor J. Maguire, Chairperson and Ciarán Kissane , Secretary to the Board of the BCI, signed on behalf of the Commission.
