The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) has today (Tuesday 23 rd May) announced the receipt of 145 submissions in response to the Phase Two consultation on the Code of Programme Standards. The Code, which is provided for under Section 19 of the Broadcasting Act 2001, aims to promote responsible broadcasting where entertainment, education and access to information are enhanced and offence and harm reduced. Submissions received were from a broad range of interested parties including broadcasters, representative bodies, educational institutions and members of the public.
Commenting on the consultation process Chief Executive of the BCI, Michael O’Keeffe said, “The Commission is pleased with the level of responses received to this consultation process. The submissions are now being reviewed by the Commission staff and detailed reports will be prepared for consideration by the Board at their meeting scheduled for 17 th July next. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who contributed submissions to the consultation process.”
Phase 3 of the process, which will involve consultation on the draft code, will be undertaken in the autumn. It is intended that the code will be formally launched by the end of 2006.
