BCI ANNOUNCES RADIO LICENSING DECISIONS

The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) has today ( 20th June 2006 ) announced the following radio licensing decisions reached at its board meeting yesterday:
Youth service for the south-west region
The Commission received three applications for a youth service in the south west region. Following consideration of the applications by the Commission, two were considered to be of sufficient standard to qualify for the second phase in the licensing process. These are:

The second phase involves a public oral hearing which will take place on Monday 17th July 2006 in the Castletroy Park Hotel, Dublin Road, Co. Limerick . Each applicant will make a presentation followed by a question and answer session with the Board of the Commission.
A decision on the licence is expected on 4th September next.

The Commission decided to award a licence in principle to Flirt FM for the renewal of a community of interest service in Galway City . Subject to the successful completion of contract negotiations, the Commission will enter into a ten-year contract with the group for the provision of a radio service for the student community of Galway City .

In accordance with the Guide to Submissions, the above applicants will be invited to attend a private oral hearing with the Commission Executive. A report on the hearing will subsequently be considered by the Commission. Decisions on both licence applications are anticipated later in the year.
