Research and Reports

Under the expanded remit of the BCI further to the Broadcasting Act, 2001 the Commission undertakes and/or commissions research to assist the development of broadcast policy in Ireland, in the context of technological change, changes in EU legislation, new programming formats and international trends and experiences.

Many areas have been investigated and reports have been produced on a number of key themes including advertising and children, television licensing, broadcasting at election times and accessing television for the visually impaired and deaf communities.

Media Research Funding Scheme

Under the BCI Research Policy and in line with commitments identified in the BCI Strategic Plan 2004-2008, The BCI funds research projects under its Media Research Funding Scheme

JNLR

Other research received by the BCI is the Joint National Listenership Research (JNLR) research. The aim of the Joint National Listenership Research (JNLR) survey is to provide reliable estimates of audience for National, Regional and Local Radio stations in Ireland. This information would be used as a basis for the planning of advertising on radio stations.

The research is carried out by TNS/mrbi for the JNLR Committee, the organisation responsible for the commissioning and control of radio audience research in Ireland. It comprises representatives of RTÉ, Today FM, the BCI, IAPI (Institute of Advertising Practitioners in Ireland) and AAI (Association of Advertisers in Ireland) - i.e. all Broadcasting Organisations; the Advertising Agencies; and the major Advertisers.
